Moodle Basics for Faculty
The everything-you-need-to-know guide to getting started in Moodle at SOU!
With the transition to Moodle 4.1, we’ll continue to update the guides posted here. In general, if instructions call for opening an “admin gear,” look for a “Settings” menu. If you find instructions that make no sense whatever in the new version, please send the URL to Hart Wilson (wilsonh@sou.edu) and we’ll fix it!
We have created many guides and articles to help you manage your Moodle courses. Let us know what else you’d like to know more about!

How to Get Help 🥺
- Keep in mind that everywhere you are in Moodle has a URL. When you have a question about a specific course element, copy the URL and send it along as a reference point.
- Screenshots are GREAT! A picture is definitely worth 1,000 words when you have a problem or question. It can be challenging to describe what you’re asking about and an image often provides all of the information needed to get you the answer you’re looking for.
- Try to call things what Moodle calls them. If you have assigned a forum to your students as homework, be sure to call it a forum, not an assignment.
- Provide as much information in your initial request for help as you can: provide the CRN, name the item that you need help with (adding the section title can be helpful) — and remember, sending the URL means you don’t have to add these details! — and explain what you’re hoping to achieve.
- Try to be specific about the challenge you are experiencing:
- Are you or your students getting an error message?
- Can some students access the item, but not all?
- Are things working differently than you expected?
- Do your settings need to be adjusted?
- Keep an eye out for a return message in case we have follow-up questions for you.
- Ask for help BEFORE you spend hours trying to figure something out on your own. Nobody wants to see you suffer in the name of self-sufficiency. We have answers and will be happy to help you out.
